Revolutionizing Performance Management at Rice University

Rice

As part of delivering on HR Excellence, Rice is implementing a new performance management program. This program is designed to enhance the ongoing partnership between supervisors and staff to accomplish university and departmental goals. The process will allow employees to better align roles, responsibilities, and goals with the university's mission and enhance their development and performance.

The program aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Establish a common language for performance expectations and evaluation. By standardizing expectations and assessments, misunderstandings and discrepancies can be eliminated, thereby fostering an environment of transparency and trust.
  2. Facilitate succession planning. This is achieved by identifying and developing high-potential employees and creating a robust pipeline of qualified talent that meets the evolving needs of the university. The program will serve as a lighthouse, guiding talented staff toward leadership positions and making succession a smooth and efficient process.
  3. Develop staff through regular feedback and growth opportunities. This will enhance job satisfaction, motivation, and productivity. Regular, constructive feedback will empower staff to reach new heights of personal and professional development.

The performance management cycle includes goal setting for the year, daily coaching and feedback, a mid-year performance check-in and the end-of-year performance review

The implementation of this program introduces employees to a performance management cycle that allows for the planning monitoring, developing, evaluating, and rewarding of employee performance. This cycle will ensure that performance management is continuous in an effort to keep employees engaged and focused throughout the year. To facilitate this process, Human Resources will be releasing performance appraisal forms which will serve as a tool for the development and evaluation of performance goals.

This new program is not just about improving performance; it's about creating a culture that values continuous learning, open communication, and shared success.
