High-efficiency HVAC systems paired with occupancy sensors throughout the building ensure efficient temperature control and energy savings. Additional environmentally friendly features include:

  • Smart lighting controls make wise use of artificial light when needed.
  • The outdoor arcade offers a shaded retreat on hot, sunny days using natural materials to reduce radiant heat.
  • A vegetated roof adorned with native-Texas plants slows stormwater runoff and provides natural insulation, adding to the building's green credentials.
  • A total of 11 water filling stations throughout the building promote hydration and decrease plastic waste.
  • Two accessible showers in the building support a commitment to wellness and further support Rice’s selection as the Best Workplace for Commuters.

The cutting-edge technology, features, and spaces throughout the O’Connor building embody the university's mission of teaching and research excellence and its commitment to a sustainable future. Guided by the United Nation’s sustainability goals and energized by a commitment to achieving carbon neutrality in 2030, Rice is paving the way to a greener tomorrow.
